Quick Guide to CBD: THC Ratios

What is a CBD: THC Ratio?

CBD and THC and the two major cannabinoids in cannabis and cannabis products. The simple definition of a CBD: THC ratio is the measure of how much CBD is in a product, relative to the amount of THC it has. In this ratio, CBD is always first and THC is always last. For example: if a product has a 4:1 ratio, that means there is 4 times as much CBD in the product as THC, and conversely, if a product has a 1:4 ratio, there is 4 times as much THC in the product as CBD.

Most Common CBD: THC Ratios

Common ratios for high-CBD products that you might see at a dispensary are 40:1, 20:1, 18:1, and 15:1. While these are the most common ratios for high-CBD products, these types of ratios in products are not as common as more moderate and lower CBD:THC ratios. These products do not offer a psychoactive effect and are used more medicinally.

Common ratios for mid-range CBD products are 10:1, 8:1, and 4:1. These mid-range CBD products are more common than the higher CBD products. With these products, the CBD still overpowers the THC, however, users may experience some minimal to small amount of psychoactive effects.

Common ratios for low CBD products are 2:1 and 1:1. These are the most common CBD: THC products. While a 1:1 ratio is still not considered to be a recreational level of THC, it will allow users to likely experience a moderate psychoactive effect.

What CBD: THC Ratio is right for you?

The right CBD: THC ratio for a user depends on a variety of factors, such as the user’s tolerance and past cannabis experience, the user’s desired effects, and the frequency of use. If a user is new to cannabis and has not experienced the psychoactive effects of THC, a higher CBD product might be a good place to start. Then, one can gradually increase the THC levels in the products they use until they find the ratio best for them. Users looking for medicinal effects (reducing anxiety, pain relief, etc.) would also likely prefer higher CBD products. More experienced users who are looking to obtain the psychoactive effect of cannabis, while also benefiting from some of CBD’s therapeutic effects, would likely prefer a lower CBD product.
